Customer Stories: 1968 Chevrolet II Nova 'Red Rocket'

Shawn Harris' 1968 Chevrolet II Nova is also known as 'Red Rocket'. Harris purchased the car in 2015 from his Father-In-Law.

Harris' Nova has been in the family for a long time. Between the Father-in-Law and his brother, one of them has owned the car since 1971. In the early days of the car, his Father-in-Law's brother (Jon Corbin) drove, and drag raced, the car while his Father-in-Law (Rex Corbin) built the engines and performed all the maintenance on the Nova. Since then, the car has mostly sat around the shop for the past 20 years, occasionally driven from time to time, mostly by Harris who would take it out cruising. Despite his best efforts to purchase the car over the years, Harris' Father-In-Law did not want to part with it. That all changed when Corbin was purging some of the "toys" in 2015. Corbin finally accepted Harris' offer to buy the Nova. Harris was elated Corbin finally said yes. Just being able to purchase the car is one of the fondest memories of the vehicle yet. The Nova was in original condition except for the power train and some slapper bars on the back. The car also still has its original paint. Due to being well maintained, there's very little rust on the floor pans. At the time of purchase, the dash, seats, and interior were all original.

Harris just began working on the car around Summer 2019. Harris' first step was removing the powertrain and chassis from the car. Next, Harris removed all the under-coating from the bottom of the car, remaining one of Harris' worst memories so far. Harris Installed a TCI Stage 1 racing chassis and completed an LS swap in the car by purchasing the Chevrolet Connect and Cruise package. The package includes the LS376/515 with the T56 transmission, putting out a mean 533 HP. The larger transmission required Harris to cut the tunnel in the Nova and add a console, which in turn led to switching over to bucket seats. When it came time for the wheels, Harris ordered and installed custom Foose wheels to give it that bad-a** appeal Harris was looking for in a design. For some more internal upgrades, Harris added the Vintage Air system to keep the rides cool, as well as the Classic Car Stereo 6 speaker plus subwoofer sound system so that he can enjoy music while cruising around. Harris knew sound deadening throughout the cabin will help keep the ride quiet. The added deadening can be especially helpful when harris is hitting the dump switch and dumping exhaust right behind the headers. Harris kept the standard gauge cluster while adding the bucket seat console gauges. These were all analog and required a few conversion components to get them all up and running. Harris also added a Be Cool cooling system as well as a gorgeous Billet Premium Tru Tac Serpentine system with a polished finish. Harris next plans to switch the car over to the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette red paint. The entire engine compartment already received the paint upgrade, just leaving the rest of the car to complete sometime soon.

Harris' fondest memories of the car involve all the time spent working with it so far. Harris is excited to be within a week of the first start-up and a month of the first road test.
