Kicker L7T vs. L7R Subwoofer

Kicker L7T vs. L7R Subwoofer

Kicker L7T

Kicker's L7T Subwoofers are one of the most sought out subwoofers on the market. Now they are available with Classic Car Stereos. L7T subwoofers are compact enough to fit under your seat or in the trunk of your car with no issues. They still provide elite power levels with their smaller infrastructure. You all no more cone area means more bass and kick coming from those speakers. The L7T sub technology gives you about 20% more cone space than a conventional sub, meaning more kick without the large size of a traditional subwoofer. L7T subs are crafted with nickel-plated terminals for extensive protection and feature standard dual-voice-coil design to get the best quality sound out of your speakers.

Kicker L7R

The Kicker L7R subwoofers offer 20% more cone area than a round subwoofer of the same diameter for increased performance in roughly the same amount of linear space. The Kicker L7R subwoofers have returned and are better than ever. The L7R offers affordable, hard-hitting performance that you expect from a Kicker L7, square woofer. The L7R woofers are the same as the L7S except for the basket material.

Sizes

The Kicker L7T subwoofers come in 8", 10", and 12" diameters. The Kicker L7R series comes in a 10", 12" and 15" model. If you're looking for more versatility on larger diameter sizing, the Kicker LZR lineup is the way to go.

Voice Coils

Both the Kicker L7T series and the Kicker L7R series come with a dual voice coil. This dual coil is featured in both 2-ohm and 4-ohm configurations across all of the models in the lineup. Just be sure to check out what lines up best with your installation. Both series of amps will have you covered when you're comparing voice coils between the two series.

Power Handling

The L7T lineup handles 350 watts at the 8" diameter, 500 watts at the 10" diameter, and 600 watts at the 12" model. The LZR series handles RMS power starting at 500 watts for the 10" model, 600 watts at the 12" model, and 900 watts at the 15" model. When comparing the same sized models between the lineups, you'll see that the RMS power handling is the same between the subs.

Mounting Depth

Where the L7T lineup starts to separate itself is in the mounting depth category. Between the same sized subs, the thin-line mounting ability of the L7T lineup shines in installations requiring a much smaller space. Be sure to check out each mounting depth to see which subwoofers will work best with your installation.

Recommended Enclosure Size

The thin-line installation of the L7T lineup also transitions over to the recommended sizing on both the ported and sealed enclosures for installation. The L7T line will install in both a smaller recommended sealed or ported enclosure over the L7R lineup when comparing same sized subs. Just be sure to check the recommended sizing on each size to see what type of volume you'll be working with on the installation.

Recommended Amplifiers

The recommended amplifier for your subwoofers will vary greatly depending on the size and quantity of subwoofers you select for your installation. The following lists are comparisons between amplifiers for subwoofers in the same dimensions between the different models. The list begins with a factory recommendation for amps that provide enough power handling for the subwoofer(s), and then move on to our professional recommendations that may vary slightly from the factory recommendations. These Classic Car Stereo recommendations may be an amp with a higher price point that will service the subs better, or an amp that provides RMS power handling over the recommended amount which will allow you to not have to maximize the output on your amp to provide full power to your subs.

    Price Points

The upgraded cost in the L7T covers the thin-line mounting depth for flexibility in installations. If you're looking for the same power to be delivered throughout your installation, but are limited in your space requirements, then the L7T pricing is a worthy investment. The L7T subs cover both the power and flexibility that you'll be looking for in your install.

    In Conclusion

Between the Kicker L7T and L7R models, the main difference you're looking to compare is if you need a thin-lined square-shaped subwoofer for your installation. The RMS power handling is the same between the comparable diameters between the two lineups. If the L7R subwoofers fall in your budget range, but you need an 8" model or thin-line installation for your setup, you'll be all set to go ahead and select the right sized L7T model(s) and get your install underway.
