1971-72 Chevelle SS OE Replica Radio

The 1971-72 Chevelle SS radio is designed to look exactly like your originalthumb wheel radio, but is brand new and offers modern features with modern technology. The1971-72 Chevelle SS radio is made by Antique Automobile Radio out of Palm Harbor, Florida and comes backedby a 1 year warranty. The attention to detail on these radios is unmatched with metal chrome parts and working mechanical pushbuttons. The tuner in the radio is an AM/FM digital tuner for high quality signal reliability, but the tuning needle does move when seeking for a station. This radio has 3 channel pre-amp outputs with a subwoofer control as well as an auxiliary input so that you can play music off of your phone, iPod, or other MP3 device.

Authentic Original Appearance

The Antique Automobile 1971-72 Chevelle SS Radio OE Replica is built to look nearly identical to the original radio that came in your vehicle, while still delivering the modern features you actually want to use. The chrome-plated knobs, dial scale, and band indicator all mirror the original design, and the pushbuttons feel mechanical even though a digital tuner underneath keeps your stations locked in without drift. Metal parts are metal, plastic parts are plastic, right down to the details judges at car shows have mistaken for the real thing.

Modern Bluetooth Connectivity

Even with that authentic look, the 1971-72 Chevelle SS radio comes standard with Bluetooth 3.0 EDR built-in, so you can stream your favorite music or podcasts through the original-style controls. A built-in microphone supports hands-free calling (HFP), and with HSP, A2DP, and AVRCP profiles supported, you can also control playback and take calls without ever breaking the classic appearance.

Quality Controls Inside and Out

All the essential controls, including volume, bass, treble, balance, fader, and tuning, are easily accessible and operate with the same look and feel as the factory radio. With 10 presets (5 AM, 5 FM) and memory retention for your settings, along with LED dial lights that never need replacing, this radio delivers the reliability of modern electronics without sacrificing that original, analog feel.

Flexible Audio Connections

For adding external audio equipment, this radio includes 3 RCA jacks for left, right, and subwoofer line outs, along with a 3.5mm auxiliary input for connecting an iPod, satellite radio, or MP3 player. Switches let you select between 1, 2, 3, or 4 speaker setups, as well as North America or Europe mode, so the radio adapts to your specific configuration.

Built to Fit, Built to Last

This radio is tooled to fit the 1971-72 Chevelle SS and drops into your original dash location without any modifications, using your vehicle's original antenna. Combined with a programmable audio equalizer and 180 watts RMS of power (45 watts x 4 speakers at 4?), you get a radio that keeps its factory-original appearance while giving you decades of reliable, modern performance underneath.

Antique Automobile Radio Wiring Diagram

Antique Automobile Radio Wiring Instructions

Head unit installation reference - power, ground, antenna, speaker, and amplifier connections. Based on the Antique Automobile Radio owner's manual.

1. Antenna Connection

Connect the antenna cable to the ANTENNA jack, located beneath the wiring harness exit. It accepts the original antenna plug.

2. Additional Connections

This unit also includes the following connections:

  • AUX. INPUT - a standard 3.5mm stereo jack for accessories like MP3 players. Tune the radio to the extreme low end of the dial in either band to switch to AUX mode.
  • Speaker switch - an 8-position switch that selects 1, 2, 3, or 4 speaker mode, and North America or Europe broadcast frequencies. The radio ships set to 4 speakers and North America. Changes to this switch are only read when the radio powers on.

3. RCA Outputs (to Amplifier)

Below the speaker switch are three color-coded RCA jacks for an external power amplifier:

Jack Color Function
Left White Stereo line out
Right Red Stereo line out
Sub Black Subwoofer amp input

4. Power & Ground

Wire Color
+12V Input (fused, main power) Red
Dial Light Green
12V Output (switched, max 4 amps) Orange
Ground Black

Note: the red wire should connect to the 12V accessory circuit. The green wire should connect to the dash light circuit ahead of the dimmer rheostat, so the radio lights come on with the other gauge lights. The orange wire is switched 12V output for options like a remote turn-on lead or power antenna, and should not power loads greater than 4 amps. The black wire should connect to a solid chassis ground.

5. Speaker Wiring

Speaker Terminal Wire Color
Left Front + Blue
Left Front - Violet
Right Front + Gray
Right Front - White
Left Rear + Blue
Left Rear - Violet
Right Rear + Gray
Right Rear - White

Note: the front speaker pair is wrapped with a yellow band, and the rear speaker pair is wrapped with a green band, to distinguish them since the wire colors repeat front to rear. If your system does not use all four speakers, tape up any unused wires so they cannot touch anything.

6. Wiring Order

  1. Connect ground.
  2. Connect the +12V input (accessory circuit) and dial light wires.
  3. Connect the antenna lead.
  4. Connect the orange 12V switched output if used for a remote turn-on lead or power antenna.
  5. Wire the front and rear speakers, matching polarity and referencing the yellow/green bands to keep pairs straight.
  6. Set the speaker switch for the correct number of speakers and broadcast region, if different from the factory default (4 speakers, North America).
  7. Run RCA cables to the amplifier (left, right, and sub) if used.
  8. Connect an AUX source to the 3.5mm jack if used.

Before You Begin

Disconnect the vehicle battery before making any wiring connections, and verify wire colors against the actual harness before connecting. This radio is for 12 volt negative ground systems only.
